This month we honor two special families who have been leaders on our KOVAR drives for several years:
Bob and Donna Klaiss at
St. Joseph Church Mike and Peggy Purcell (and children) at St. Theresa Church
Their efforts as coordinators of their parish collections raised over $4,000 for KOVAR this year.
I present this award with congratulations and thanks to the Klaiss and Purcell families.

Past Family of the Month Honorees:
Bobby, Noreen, Jonathan, and Callie Gannon (March 2011)
This family are members of Christ the Redeemer Church, and they truly exemplify the virtue of charitable service. The father is a Past Grand Knight who remains a key member of our Council. He's also a dedicated coach of youth soccer and other sports. His son is only a few years away from becoming a third-generation member of our Order. Many times the entire family can be found working together to support our activities. Last month they did an outstanding job to make things run smoothly at the Father-Daughter Dance and Steak Night. Each of these events was a packed house with at least 150 in attendance.
For being examples of "Christ in Action" I'm proud to honor our Family of the Month: Bobby, Noreen, Jonathan, and Callie Gannon.
Congratulations and Thank You!

The Good Samaritan Steak Night Crew (February 2011)
This Brother Knight and his Lady have been strong supporters of our Council activities. They frequently attend Friday dinners and other events, and usually bring a few guests. The gentleman has been a worker at our bingo game almost every week, and we truly appreciate his participation (especially on the many nights when we're short on staff). His Lady has helped to promote bingo by distributing flyers in various locations. This couple is also one of the leading ticket sellers in our council raffles.
I'm proud to honor our Family of the Month: Dave and Laurie Uhl.

Steve, Laura, and Steven Schultz (December 2010)
This family attends St. Theresa Church and the father is a long-time member of our council. He and his Lady have participated in or helped us to run numerous events over the years, including dinners, dances, and catering gigs. Also, his son joined the Order last year and has become an active member. The father has demonstrated management skill and exceptional dedication in taking care of many details to keep the Barn in operation through some difficult times. He truly put his heart and soul into this job, and the council was fortunate to have someone like him in that position. In October he was elected President of the Compass and Anchor Club at a critical point in the organization’s history. I know that he’s doing his best in a very challenging situation, and not many of us would want to be in his shoes.
It is with gratitude and appreciation that I name our Family of the Month: Steve, Laura, and Steven Schultz.
Congratulations!

PGK and SK Don and Frances Harris (November 2010)
This Sir Knight and his Lady are one of the most admired couples in our Good Samaritan family. He has been a member of the Order for 33 years and has served our Council with distinction in a variety of ways. Even as a "retired" Grand Knight he continues to serve as our publicity chairman, on the scholarship committee, and recently was appointed Historian for the Virginia State Council. He attends most of the council business meetings, and always has something meaningful to contribute in our discussions. His Lady has been a strong supporter of his involvement with the Knights, and she frequently attends or volunteers to help with council events. Their son is also a member and their grandson is a future Knight who often joins them to work at events.
We extend our appreciation and congratulations to the Family of the Month: PGK and SK Don and Frances Harris.

Bill, Siobhan, and Finbar Cahillane (October 2010)
This family are members of St. Joseph Church and often participate in our events. The father is a Fourth Degree member of our Order. He has a natural talent for making people feel at ease and promoting a spirit of fraternalism. His well known phrase "God Bless and Safe Home" is a heartfelt blessing to each person as he or she departs the Barn. The past weekend this couple assisted with our food booth at the Catholic Heritage Festival. They also have supported our Friday dinners by their attendance and work in the kitchen. This Brother Knight, his Lady, and her brother have hosted several of the dinners. We are grateful for their friendship and service.
Congratulations to our Family of the Month: Bill, Siobhan, and Finbar Cahillane.
We also want to recognize and thank Siobhan's brother Sean McCarthy for sharing his culinary expertise.

Mike and Diana Zavala (September 2010)
This Brother Knight and his Lady are active members of St. Theresa Parish. He's been a member of the Order for over 20 years. They can often be found working together on catering and other activities around the Barn. In July they volunteered to coordinate our Friday night dinner program, which is no small task. It involves arranging for cooks and menus, publicizing the events, and making sure everything runs smoothly. Because of their efforts our members and other guests enjoy great food and fraternalism at a reasonable price. This gentleman has also been a participant on our bowling and softball teams for several years.
I'm pleased to honor our Family of the Month: Mike and Diana Zavala.

They work behind the scenes at many events that raise money and promote a spirit of fraternalism. His Lady has a unique talent for decorating and spends a lot of time in creating a special environment for Steak Nights and catering events. I know that our members and patrons appreciate her efforts. This couple's children have often joined them in volunteering to help with events. They follow their parents example of charitable service. The family also supports our bingo games as workers or players. We are fortunate to have them in our council.
I'm pleased to name the family of Jim and Kathleen Wheaton as our Family of the Month.

Joe and Sharon Belzile (June 2010)
We honor a Sir Knight and his Lady who are members of Christ the Redeemer Parish. Over the years they have donated so much of their time and talents to the council. For the past few years they have coordinated the Friday Night Dinner program, even when it was very difficult to keep it going. They also volunteer as cooks for several of our catering events. This Brother Knight has also been an officer in both Good Samaritan Council and Seton Assembly, and his Lady is always there to support him. He's an active participant with our bingo teams and serves as bingo treasurer, which involves a lot of paperwork behind the scenes. In addition, he's a leader on our First and Second Degree teams, and serves as a Eucharistic Minister at his parish.

Bob and Donna Klaiss (May 2010)
This family are members of St. Joseph Parish. He’s a brother Knight who will celebrate 25 years of membership in Good Samaritan council this year. He and his Lady have always been active and faithful volunteers and supporters of numerous council activities. Also, they have coordinated our KOVAR collection after Masses for many years. In the past 4 years their efforts at St. Joseph Church raised $8,400 for this worthy cause. They are one of those families who are the foundation of our council, and we should all strive to follow their example of charitable service.
It’s with pleasure that I name Bob and Donna Klaiss as our Family of the Month.
Congratulations!

Bob, Ginger, Kim, Katie, and Melissa Griffin (April 2010)
The Family of the Month are members of Christ the Redeemer Parish. Last month this family volunteered to for the 5th consecutive year to coordinate the Annual Easter Egg hunt. Children from the council and community were invited to participate. This family provided refreshments and called upon the Easter Bunny to make an appearance. Although inclement weather forced the event indoors, they improvised and were able to stage the Easter Egg Hunt upstairs. They divided the floor into sections for kids of different age groups. Prizes were awarded to those who found the special eggs. Both kids and their parents had a great time and the event ran smoothly.
In recognition of their support at Christ the Redeemer and Good Samaritan Council, it gives me great pleasure to name Bob, Ginger, Kim, Katie, and Melissa Griffin as our Family of the Month.
Congratulations!

Bobby, Noreen, Jonathan, and Callie Gannon (March 2010)
This family attends Christ the Redeemer Church and is one of the families we consider as the foundation of our council. The father is a Past Grand Knight who continues to support our activities in so many ways. He’s also a dedicated coach of youth soccer and other sports, and he teaches CCD classes at his parish. Many times his entire family can be found volunteering to help us at events that include Steak Night, Father-Daughter Dance, and the Columbus Day Parade. His son is only a few years away from becoming a third-generation member of Good Samaritan Council. Like his father, he has been taught the lessons of charitable service and exemplifies this virtue.
For being stellar examples of “Christ in Action” I’m proud to honor our Family of the Month: Bobby, Noreen, Jonathan, and Callie Gannon.
Congratulations!

Worthy District Deputy Jay McCarthy and Margie (February 2010)
This Sir Knight and his Lady are outstanding supporters of the Order and Good Samaritan Council. He is a Past Grand Knight who has often provided sage advice to me as a council officer. Today his talent for leadership is more widely recognized throughout the councils of our District and within the State Council. Although he maintains a very busy schedule, this Brother finds time to serve on the St. Joseph Parish Advisory Committee and is captain of a collection counting team. He actively promotes the Knights of Columbus within the parish, and reminds the priests that we are here to serve them. This Brother Knight and his Lady also exemplify the virtues of a Christian family, and they enjoy spending time with their daughters and four grandchildren.
I’m proud to recognize our Family of the Month: Our Worthy District Deputy Jay McCarthy and his lovely wife Margie.
Our family of the month are members of St. Theresa Parish in Ashburn. They are regular attendees at Friday Night Dinners and other events, and the parents work together in raising three children. The father is a 4th Degree Knight who is an active board member with the Compass and Anchor Club. In November this family answered the call of the Grand Knight to coordinate our Youth Christmas Party. They did a lot of work in planning for this event. Unfortunately, our recent blizzard required us to cancel the party, but I’m sure it would have been a lot of fun for the youth of our council and three parishes.
Our Family of the Month for January are John, Stephanie, Caitlin, Matthew, and Emily Dumm.
Congratulations!

This gentleman serves as a council officer, and he is there to lend a hand almost every week at bingo. His Lady has volunteered to distribute bingo flyers at various locations to help promote our games. This Brother Sir Knight is a Past Grand Knight of Good Samaritan Council and a former District Deputy. He and his Lady coordinate the preparation of delicious breakfast buffets following our three Corporate Communions each year. They also lead the team for our popular fish fry during Lent, and help prepare food for the Polish Night dinner. Their sons have become active members of our council. Even their grandchildren often join them in the kitchen. It’s obvious they are passing on great lessons of charity and service to the next generation.
Our Family of the Month for November 2009 is Gary and Nancy Ball.

Rob, Cassandra, Matthew, and Anna Henry (October 2009)
This family attends Mass together at St. Joseph Church on Sunday mornings, with the father proudly wearing his Knights of Columbus name badge. Although this gentleman is one of our younger members, he’s a leader in many ways. As council treasurer he works to keep our financial records in order, and we can depend on him for thorough and accurate reports every month. He also volunteers on a bingo team and the Second Degree team. Recently this member has worked to raise money for local seminarians through his participation in the Marine Corps Marathon. And, most important of all, he and his wife are great parents for
their two young children. During the past weekend this family supported our District Fall Fest. We need more people like them to invigorate our council and keep it going for years to come.
I’m proud to present our Family of the Month for October 2009: Rob, Cassandra, Matthew, and Anna Henry.
Congratulations!

Cyndi and PGK Mike Leddy (September 2009)
This Brother Knight and his Lady came through in a big way to help the council have a successful food booth at Catholic Heritage Festival last month. They were key members of our team and worked all day, from transport of supplies in their truck, to managing our operations at the festival. Because of their participation, everything ran more efficiently and effectively than would have otherwise been possible.
This couple also plays a major role in the success of our monthly Steak Night, working hard in the kitchen for the evening so our guests can enjoy a delicious
meal with their families. They also serve as cooks for our catering events. In addition, he has been active for many years on the council’s Degree teams. They both exemplify the kind of charitable service that is a foundation of our Order.
It is my honor to recognize our Family of the Month for September 2009, Cyndi and PGK Mike Leddy.
Congratulations!

Mary Ann, John, and Christopher Thomas (August 2009)
This family attends St. Joseph Church and has been recognized for their service to the Council on several occasions. This month I decided to honor them not for their work on a certain project or event, but for the inspiration and example they have provided to our members. The mother of this family experienced a serious illness with kidney disease and required a transplant. Her daughter was identified as a prospective donor. But three days before the operation the doctors found she actually was not a suitable candidate. At that point, her 23-year old grandson stepped forward as a potential donor. He was found to be a perfect match and
the transplant was successfully performed on July 17th. When asked why he wanted to be the donor, the grandson said that he loved his grandmother and wants to make sure that she’s around for a long time. What a marvelous demonstration of love and charity! This young man is a student at Shepherd University and joined our Council when he was only 18. Throughout this ordeal, the entire family exhibited a genuine faith and trust in God. Their story shows the power of faith, the power of prayer, and the power of love within a Christian family.
It’s my honor to award Family of the Month for August 2009 to Mary Ann, John, and Christopher Thomas.
Congratulations!
Len Grus Grand Knight
Maria, Dan, and Liam Cahill (July 2009)
This family attends Mass together each week at St. Joseph Church.
The mother works hard to care for her family and makes sure everything runs smoothly at home.
The father has served our Council as an officer and frequently volunteers to assist with our catering events.
His son usually accompanies him and serves on the catering team.
By his example, this father is teaching his son how to be a Catholic gentleman.
The son is a fine young man who enjoys being involved with our activities.
I’m confident that he will ultimately become an outstanding member of our Order.
We need more families like this one to develop the next generation of Knights.
It’s a great pleasure to honor our Family of the Month for July: Maria, Dan, and Liam Cahill.
Congratulations!

Linda & John (Jack) Devins (January 2009)
TThe Family of the Month for January 2009 are members of St. Joseph’s Parish in Herndon. While only
being a member of the council for a year, this Knight has become an active member. He is in attendance at
most meetings and he and his wife are supporters of our Friday Night Dinners. This couple took the initiative to
cook a couple of special dinners recently. They first came up with a German Oktoberfest featuring homemade
traditional German delicacies. The dinner was one of the most popular dinners we had last year. It was great to
see so many members and their families enjoying a good meal and partaking in some fraternalism. They also
cooked a Cincinnati Chili meal, which featured either chili or chili over spaghetti with various toppings.
Thanks to this couple we had two memorable meals these last couple of months.
In recognition of their support to Good Samaritan Council, it gives me great pleasure to name Linda & John
(Jack) Devins as the Good Samaritan Family of the Month for January 2009.
John Reaser III Grand Knight
Nancy & Gary Ball, PGK (December 2008)
The Family of the Month for December 2008 are members of Christ the Redeemer’s Parish in Sterling.
This family has been active members of the council for many years. Their fry fish dinners are one of the most
popular dinners that we host each year. However it was their actions during the week before Thanksgiving that
I would like to acknowledge. First this couple cooked a Thanksgiving lunch for the Council Seniors group.
Then two days later this couple was busy early in the morning cooking the lunch that was brought over to the
Herndon Senior Center as part of the Knights Senior Thanksgiving Luncheon. And right afterwards they started
preparing for the fish fry to be held later that night. I am very grateful that this couple was able to help out and
support the council when no one else was available and would like to thank them personally for making sure
that both the seniors of the council and those of the Herndon area were taking care of and well fed.
In recognition of their support at Christ the Redeemer and Good Samaritan Council, it gives me great
pleasure to name Nancy & Gary Ball, PGK as the Good Samaritan Family of the Month for December 2008.
John Reaser III Grand Knight
Leye & Stanley Chrzanowski (November 2008)
The Family of the Month for November 2008 are members of St. Joseph’s Parish in
Herndon. This family is active supporting both their church and council. Besides
being Eucharistic Ministers every Sunday, this couple also brings the Eucharist to
people that are too sick to attend mass. Since transferring to our council they have
become active members. They attend almost every Friday Night Dinner and most of
the activities that go on within the council. This couple has also taken the job of
council photographers by photographing all of our events. Their pictures have
enhanced our Handout newsletter, bulletin board, and web site. This couple also
showed initiative by planning and running a Football Watch Party during the month
of October. This couple ran the event from food prep, to bartending, to setup and
cleanup. Besides bringing back a Good Samaritan tradition, they tried to bring in
more revenue to the facility to help to council survive these tough times.
In recognition of their support at St. Joseph’s and Good Samaritan Council, it gives
me great pleasure to name Leye & Stanley Chrzanowski as the Good Samaritan
Family of the Month for November 2008.
John Reaser III Grand Knight
Sharon & Joseph Belzile (October 2008)
The Family of the Month for October 2008 are members of Christ the Redeemer’s Parish in Sterling. This
couple has been the lead cooks for many of our Friday Night Dinners. This Brother Knight coordinates the
Friday Night Dinners, making sure that we have a good variety of menus to offer to our guests. This couple
picks up the fresh food items from local stores during the week. You can usually find them at the Barn on
Thursday night doing all the prep work so that everything is prepared and ready for the Friday Dinner. Thanks
to this couples dedication, our Friday Night Dinners have come back strong after the summer stoppage.
In recognition of their support at Christ the Redeemer and Good Samaritan Council, it gives me great
pleasure to name Sharon & Joseph Belzile as the Good Samaritan Family of the Month for October 2008.
John Reaser III Grand Knight
Laura & Steve Schultz (September 2008)
The Family of the Month for September 2008 are members of St. Theresa’s in Ashburn. You will see
this couple at almost all catering events. Whether it’s cooking for the event, bartending, or
working the serving line. This Knight has been an active member of the council for the past 10 years.
For the past several years this Knight has served on the Compass & Anchor (C&A) board, more recently as
the Vice President. While this Knight does a lot of volunteering for the council, he is also one of
those behind the scenes Knights. He is the one that orders food for all events, keeps the food inventory
to a minimum, and sets up the bar prior to most events. This couple is always in attendance at the Friday
Night Dinners and is always there to lend a hand when the cooking/serving staff is shorthanded and needs
helps.
In recognition of their support of Good Samaritan Council, it gives me great pleasure to name
Laura & Steve Schultz as the Good Samaritan Family of the Month for September 2008.
